BIO 23
An international design event
Client’s wish
The Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, wanted to reposition the Biennial of Design (BIO) as an international design event where contemporary developments are explored and reflected. Organisation in Design was invited as curator of the main exhibition of the 23rd BIO. It was the first time MAO appointed external curators for the exhibition.
Analysis
BIO was founded back in 1963 and has developed an excellent reputation as one of the world’s oldest international design events. After many successful editions of the biennial in the last decennia it was time for BIO to develop further and strive to be an international forum for new approaches of design. With our vast and broad network in the international design field, Organisation in Design was the perfect partner to help BIO prepare for the next step.
What we did
Together with MAO, Organisation in Design formulated the main theme: Design Relations. We developed a new path for BIO and revised the format by setting up key themes and subcategories. Organisation in Design’s fresh approach was the key to appeal to an international network of design professionals.
MAO received no less than 437 submissions from a record of 38 countries. We curated the works, selected an international jury composed of renowned design professionals and set up an internationally oriented exhibition showing the best of contemporary design.
Since the successful collaboration between Organisation in Design and BIO, BIO has been curated by other renowned curators such as Jan Boelen, Marjan Vardjan, Angela Rui and Thomas Geisler
